30 | www.probussouthpacific.org COVER STORY Badge of honour NAME: John Munro CLUB: Toowoomba West, Qld I COLLECT: Hat badges I HAVE: 258 I've been collecting since 1990 when we did a trip to Britain and the Continent. The collection started in Britain because I wanted small souvenirs that were easy to carry and every time I went somewhere I would seek out a hat badge. I've got 258 at last count. I have collected them from all over the world. We did a trip to Russia and I got some Russian military hat badges, but favourites include one from Canada that's a maple leaf flag and one that's an autumn coloured maple leaf, as well as some of the British ones. The one from Exeter Cathedral is special. I also have a Munro crest badge I got in Scotland, which would come in pretty close as the favourite. Also my Broncos badge means a lot to me. Of the Australian ones, I have one from Port Campbell, which is on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. I also have badges from every Australian capital city as well as various country towns. I have one from Emerald in Queensland, which is my favourite town in Queensland and where my daughter lives. My son lives in Tasmania and I have a few from Tassie too. We've also travelled around New Zealand and I have badges from popular tourist spots like Christchurch, Auckland and the Bay of Islands. I also pick up a Legacy badge each year. I display them in frames on walls -- recently I finished a display of some of the badges on canvas. I don't have any trips planned right now, although we're looking at the possibility of a cruise. But whether we can get badges will be a bit doubtful. I'll keep collecting and every time I go somewhere I'll check to see if there's a hat badge around. I recently went to the Museum of Brisbane and I was surprised they don't have them. I was told they do get inquiries, so maybe they will stock them one day. •• I'll keep collecting and every time I go somewhere I'll check to see if there's a hat badge around. Studio 60 Photography
