Active RetireesTM | 29 COVER STORY Barks & brews NAME: Jean Begg CLUB: Macleod PC, Vic I COLLECT: China schnauzers and teapots I HAVE: 90 I've been collecting for about 30 years and I have 70 teapots -- miniature and full-sized ones -- and 20 china schnauzers. My husband used to train schnauzers and they have really wonderful temperaments. My favourite teapot is a Coalport teapot because it was my Mum's. I keep collecting because I can't help myself. I started with a Robo teapot that was black when I bought it way up in the hills in country NSW. It was in a dirty little basket and it didn't cost very much. I polished it to silver and I use it every day. The collection started from there. People give me a lot of teapots as presents, especially my family, or they see one and will pick one up for me. I also go around to op shops, but I really haven't bought very many myself. My favourite schnauzer is a large one about 35cm high that stands on a chiffoniere at the front door. My other schnauzers sit on shelves. We used to have real miniature schnauzers we would show. They really have a lovable temperament and they don't have a naughty bone in their body. I have exhibited the teapots once in nearby Ivanhoe a few years ago, in the town hall, for a 'back to Heidelberg week' . At home I keep them around the kitchen walls. I have wall-to-wall cabinets -- but my husband has told me he won't build me any more shelves to hold them all. If you want to make the most of your collection, don't be pushed around by other people. Get what you like because you're the one who has to live with them. I choose ones I like for their shape and colour. » My husband used to train schnauzers and they have really wonderful temperaments. Anomaly Photography
