Last Christmas my daughter gave me one that looks like a real stuffed owl, but it's in a cupboard so it doesn't collect dust. What a hoot NAME: Susan Hayes CLUB: Timboon and District, Vic I COLLECT: owls I HAVE: approximately 100 I'm from Timboon in Victoria and I collect owls. I started collecting about 15 years ago when my Dad died, although I had a couple before then. A few days after he died I had a vivid dream and my Dad appeared as a full-grown owl. It really gave me a sense of peace and the collection started from there. For me owls signify seeing something more than what you think might be out there. I have all sorts of owls, around 100 altogether. I have soft toys, garden and shelf ornaments, necklaces and jewellery, salt and pepper shakers, vases, toothpick holders -- a bit of everything. My favourites are a bright pink owl my daughter gave me and an owl my son gave me as a present for no particular reason. But I like them all. I've put them around the garden, on the whole top shelf of one bookshelf and on different walls and shelves around the house. My friends like to see if I have added to the collection. Last Christmas my daughter gave me one that looks like a real stuffed owl, but it's in a cupboard so it doesn't collect dust. I don't exhibit them, but I would if I was asked, as long as it was close enough. I don't have any particular plans to add to the collection, but if I see one randomly I might get it. You can generally pick them up at op shops. My advice to other people who want to start a collection is to always be on the lookout for whatever you want to collect. For me, there's always something appealing about owls, especially when you are given one as a present. »
