16 | www.probussouthpacific.org T here’s music everywhere in Vienna and, it is said, if your ear is tuned you can hear the music stop each evening as performances conclude around the city. The Vienna State Opera is one of the best opera venues in the world and the long list of Austrian composers include Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, Gustav Mahler and a swag of Strausses including Blue Danube waltz composer, Johann Strauss II. If you love ballroom dancing, don your finery and choose one from more than 300 balls that take place during the three-month carnival season. Beginning in late November, it is an 18th-century tradition that continues today. Opera lovers must of course attend a performance at the fabulous State Opera Theatre. There are performances 300 days of the year, including Tosca, La Traviata, Ariadne auf Naxos and Otello. Art and history buffs can never tire of Vienna’s many galleries and museums. This year, the city is celebrating 150 years since the birth of symbolist painter Gustav Klimt with ten special exhibitions. Venues include the Belvedere, which holds the world’s largest collection of the artist’s work; the Leopold Museum, which will provide a glimpse into the artist’s private life at its Klimt: Up Close and Personal exhibition; and the Vienna Secession, hosting the critically acclaimed Beethovenfries (Beethoven Frieze). travel international There are performances at the State Opera Theatre 300 days of the year.
