Active RetireesTM | 11 WALk this WAy By Richard cann Warrie circuit, springbrook National Park, Queensland Length: 17km Difficulty: Moderate W: www.derm.qld.gov.au/parks/springbrook Part of the World Heritage Area of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, Springbrook National Park lies 100km south of Brisbane and offers some of the world’s most important and rich wilderness. Canyon Lookout makes for a spectacular introduction to the 17km Warrie Circuit, which follows the base of the Canyon cliffs past a series of waterfalls before dropping into subtropical rainforest. This walk is characterised by mossy, damp rock underfoot, so make sure you’re wearing appropriate footwear. The ‘Meeting of the Waters’, where several creeks intersect, makes for an ideal lunchspot, a little over halfway through the circuit. While sugar gliders, quolls, brushtail possums and koalas will do their best to keep out of sight, the sounds of cuckoo-doves, whip birds, yellow-tailed black cockatoos, a variety of frogs, and perhaps even lyrebirds remind walkers that they’re not alone. The second half takes you back up the western side of the gorge. It’s a relentless climb, but there are plenty more breathtaking waterfalls that offer excuses to pause, including Gooroolba, Poonyahra and Poondahra falls. Strength for health Balance and strength training integrated into everyday routines could reduce falls in older people by almost a third, according to a new University of Sydney study. “Less than 10 per cent of older people routinely engage in strength training,” says Professor Lindy Clemson, lead author of the study. The Lifestyle integrated Functional Exercise (LiFE) program involves embedding balance and lower limb strength training into daily routines. Rather than a prescribed set of exercises, participants are encouraged to complete LiFE activities, such as walking sideways or bending knees, whenever the opportunity arises during the day. Only 2 minutes walk from Woy Woy station the M.V .
