Active Retirees : Active Retirees Aug-Sept 2012
We also have horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pony rides, facepainting for the kids, a great big luncheon pavilion and a barbecue. The year before last, we were just at the end of a drought and thought we wouldn't get any vegetables. Because everyone knew, they put extra effort in, and we were swamped with pumpkins and tomatoes. That year, the luncheon pavilion ran out of vegetables halfway through the afternoon. We are 20km from the nearest big grocer shop, so they came down to the pavilion and took the vegetables from the exhibition. It’s a country show, so no one minded. Last year we had about 2000 people come along. It's one of the most popular shows on the coast, simply because it's an agricultural show. We don't have the sideshow alley or anything like that, which many of the bigger shows have -- we keep it very local. Q Do you ever have trouble flling committee positions in your Probus club? It’s a bit diffcult. I was foundation secretary four years ago, and we have about 35 members now. We have had problems flling positions, but then you simply ask somebody straight out and they do it. The sense of community here is fantastic. I was told when I moved here that there are about 80 different community organisations based in Candelo. We have a men's shed, and half the men belong to the Probus club as well, and the ladies have their craft group, and half the ladies there belong to Probus as well. So there is a lot of overlap. We have a very strong Tae Kwon Do association for the kids; they perform nationally, and win nationally too. We also have a very strong music group down here as well, so we run a bi-annual festival. •• I love lavender; when I moved here I put in a lot of fast-growing varieties that flower at different times.
