Active Retirees : Active Retirees Aug-Sept 2012
Active RetireesTM | 9 November for travel after November each year. Many Probus members wish to book well ahead to take advantage of ‘early bird specials’, organise their travel insurance before they commit any money, and travel to the northern hemisphere in the northern summer. Ian Davidson Probus Club of Wahroonga East. Members booking holidays for December 2012 onwards can take out the policy to cover cancellation and/or loss of deposits up to 30 November 2012. Members taking up this option will be advised in early November if the policy is not renewed, giving them sufficient time to purchase alternative insurance from 1 December 2012. If the policy is renewed, members’ coverage will be extended to cover their travel dates. Members may be asked to sign new documentation, but no f ur ther payment will be required. Asylum seekers I was tempted to say and do nothing about my refugee concerns, but to do so would make me complicit to the appalling behaviour of our elected representatives. Of course I recognise that there is no easy answer that would satisfy the beliefs of all parties in the debate, or it would have already been installed. However, there are three fundamental issues that we should keep in mind: respecting other nations’ sovereignty, respecting the decisions of asylum seekers, and accepting responsibility, as a sovereign nation, for what goes on within our borders. We should respect the sovereignty of other countries no matter how much we disapprove of what they do. This principle applies to suggestions that we establish processing centres in other countries; how would we feel if the US wanted to establish processing camps in Australia? We cannot stop people setting out from dangerous areas by boat or any other mode of transport if that is what they decide to do. I am very sad when people die in their attempts to get to Australia or any other country, but I do not feel accountable for them making that decision whether it proves to be a good or bad choice. If we accept the premise that we are not accountable for what goes on outside our borders, we should accept responsibility and accountability for what goes on inside our borders, where we have the authority to act. If anyone lands in our territory we should provide accommodation and sustenance, with freedom of access and egress from accommodation, until such time as we have quickly determined his or her status. John Lunn Ballarat East Probus, Vic Diabetes education Thank you for the interesting article ‘Sugar sugar’ in the June-July 2012 edition of Active Retirees. You might like to know that The Ladies Probus Club of Sunbury Inc. has also been active in providing diabetes education to our members. We were extremely fortunate at our April general meeting to have local pharmacist and diabetes educator John Silverii present a talk to more than 60 members about the rise in western society of type two diabetes, its prevention, good eating habits including information about a low-GI diet, the need to increase activity and simple ways to remain fit. Mr Silverii gave us guidelines, very much like the 10 steps in the article, to reduce the risk of diabetes and to prevent hypers and hypos (too high and too low blood sugar levels) for the ladies in the audience who had been diagnosed with diabetes. Mr Silverii was able to provide these ladies with tips on better management in the use of their testing equipment and, after the meeting, he provided one-on-one education and guidance to those ladies who sought out his expertise. Thanks for the article – I will point it out to our ladies at the next general meeting. Frances Caruso Ladies Probus Club of Sunbury, Vic Have your say!
