Active Retirees : Active Retirees June-July 2012
8 | www.probussouthpacific.org Over the past few years, membership of the North Coast Probus Club in Western Australia has been declining for a variety of reasons. To ensure the future of the club, a membership committee was appointed and given the task of working out strategies to recruit new members. North Coast decided to host an open day and various methods were used to advertise the event. • North Coast's newsletter editor designed invitations that were sent out to those who expressed interest. • Personalised invitations were sent to friends, relatives and neighbours of club members. • Advertisements were placed in the Little Aussie Directory and the Have-a- go newspaper. • Flyers were placed on shopping centre and library noticeboards. • All invitations were followed up by phone calls in the ensuing weeks. The open day attracted 46 people including representatives from local Probus groups and the Scarborough Rotary Club, who were kind enough to address the gathering and provide information and brochures on the benefits of joining a Probus Club. Morning tea and fun entertainment followed the formalities. After many weeks of full-on activity, the membership committee was very heartened to see that the membership drive had resulted in an overall increase of 42 per cent, thereby boosting the membership numbers once again to a healthy level. After analysis, it was noted that the most successful strategy employed was that of sending personalised invitations to the people whose names were submitted by club members. This approach resulted in 63 per cent of the final uptake. An added advantage of this approach was that these prospective members came to the club knowing existing members, making them feel more relaxed and comfortable from the outset. All of the new members have now been inducted into the club and are enjoying everything that a Probus Club has to offer.
