Launching the gallery’s six-part Great Collections of the World series, Picasso to Warhol: Fourteen Modern Masters, is a collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). The following five instalments, to take place over three years, will draw on various curatorial departments in the extensive MoMA collection, including design and photography. This year, celebrations include the 110- year anniversary of the Cadillac, 90 years of the Austin Seven, 75 years of A Model Fords, and 50 years of Cortina, Triumph Spitfire, MGB, Valiant and Lotus Elan, among many other milestones. Alongside the raceway, the bike and car clubs display their glorious machines in the Shannons Classic Car Park, and the racing beasts are on view in the Competition Paddock. On the Friday, the Benalla & District Classic Car & Motorbike Tour will assemble at the Benalla Art Gallery at 9am before making its way to the ‘Shine and Show’ display. All red-plate vehicles are welcome to join the tour. On the Sunday, owners of commercial or military vehicles more than 50 years’ old are invited to join a special display – the older the better – and owners of pre-1975 utes should get in quick to join the U Bute Aussie Ute gathering, with giveaways for the first 200 entrants as well as special prizes for special interest Aussie Utes. Two ticketed concerts on Friday and Saturday nights will feature the cream of Australia’s country crop, including Lee Kernaghan, Beccy Cole, Jayne Denham, Adam Harvey, Troy Cassar-Daly and Sunny Cowgirls. As well as the music greats, there is plenty of free entertainment and daily events including the Beaut Ute Show, Urban Rodeo, Bush Poets, line dancing and Stockman’s Arena. The full program will be announced on 9 May, so film buffs can start planning what they will cram into the two weeks of festivities.
