Active RetireesTM | 31 COVER STORY around two-thirds of people aged over 55 live with a partner. Of those, 82 per cent live in detached houses and 83 per cent have three or more bedrooms. The latest ABS statistics on temporary residents – collected in 1999 – show that 12 per cent of dwellings of people over 55 accommodate temporary residents, that is, people who stay for more than 20 nights in a year but who are not full-time residents. These visitors can include grandchildren visiting in their holidays, adult children who stay one or two nights for easy access to work, or students who board during term time. “But our 2009 survey showed that the figure was almost double that,” Judd says, although he does concede that the research sample may have been skewed slightly to people at the lower end of the age bracket and wealthier homeowners. Nevertheless, it’s important to consider whether you will be able to continue having guests stay if you reduce the number of bedrooms in your home. Spreading out Spare rooms aren't just for guests though, says Judd. “Quite a few older people sleep in separate bedrooms even if they do live in a couple relationship, either to accommodate medical equipment, for a sleep disorder or even for snoring,” he explains. “Plus, when people retire they spend more time in their own home, which might mean they need extra space. “They might introduce new activities in their lives, which means they need more space, or they might need space for a home office for part-time work or managing their finances. So even if a couple shares a bedroom, they might also need a room for an office, as well as a spare room, which adds up to a three bedroom house.” Moving on Where people move to when they choose to downsize depends on their age, according to Barry Mann, general manager – development, retirement living at Stockland. In his experience, young retirees aged between 55 and 70 are more likely to move further afield for a seachange or a treechange, or to follow their kids. “Older retirees aged up to 85 tend to move no more than five kilometres from where they currently live. So they are downsizing within an area they currently know.” He says the vast majority of Stockland’s residents fit the latter category. Conscious that many who buy one of their properties are downsizing from a larger family home, Mann says Stockland’s retirement accommodation is built with considerable storage facilities. “We also have assistance programs to help people decide what to bring with them to make it easy for them to move,” he says.
