Having strong muscles means you are more mobile and can do things like get out of a chair on your own, pick up your grandkids and lift the groceries. Developing strong, stable muscles also helps prevent falls. Professor Newton says both males and females should aim for two to three weight-training sessions each week. Resistance workouts include exercises with hand weights, resistance bands and other household objects. Exercises such as chair dips, bicep curls, lunges, squats and modified push-ups build muscle. Stretching workouts such as yoga help keep the body mobile and flexible. Flexibility will help while gardening, getting dressed and tending to chores around the home. You can try yoga at a gym or studio, or even buy an instructional DVD and try it in the lounge room. Otherwise, regular stretches for the legs, arms and back can be done a few minutes each day. It is best to stretch when your muscles are warm, so do it after your 30 minutes of moderate intensity cardio. While strength and strong muscles will help prevent falls to a certain degree, balance exercises are also required to keep you stable. Pilates builds strength from the inside out and works on your balance. Or you can try some simple balancing routines such as standing on one foot and then the other without holding onto anything. RStretching workouts such as yoga help keep the body mobile and flexible. Flexibility will help while gardening, getting dressed and tending to chores around the home.
