Active Retirees : Active Retirees Jun-Jul
Active RetireesTM | 45 “We only ride twice a month, but it gives people an opportunity. Once they start and they see the facilities at Olympic Park, there’s no reason why they can’t take themselves there whenever they feel like it. It’s an introduction to cycling.” The social side of the rides is central to the group. “In summer, we often start at the Armoury Wharf on Parramatta River at 4pm, ride for a couple of hours then come back for a happy hour, because there are excellent barbecue areas there. We have a good old chat.” The group has even teamed up with other Probus cycling groups, something Bill is keen to do more often. “If people from other Probus clubs are interested I don’t mind having a chat to help them set up their own cycling group, or if they just want to join us, no worries. It’s all about meeting people.” To join the Oakhill-Dural Combined cycling group, contact Bill. T: (02) 9484 6462 Why I cycle One of the things that drew Julie Hook to the Probus club two years ago was the cycling group they were starting up. “T he last time I’d cycled I was aboutnine, soitwasabitofa shock to the system,” she says. “I had an old, decrepit bike under the house, but I ended up buying a cheap bike from K-mart for $80 and I’ve never looked back. “I t’s a good aerobic sport, and I had some knee problems and knew cycling would improve my knee. “Iusedtogotothegymand cycle in front of the television screen, but that’s no fun. I wanted to be out in the air. "If I do 25km to 30km I’ll sleep like a baby, wake up the next day and feel great.” We were 65 years of age at that stage but after a couple of weeks we rode from Strathfield to Botany Bay and back.
